These DIY felt Christmas coasters are a simple craft project to get you into the holiday spirit! All you need is felt, cardboard, glue, and some retro inspirations!

Retro Inspirations

I get so inspired by the creative people I follow online. The holiday season seems to bring out inventiveness in many, and there are so many clever retro DIYs this year. MidCenturyDigz on Instagram has been making the most adorable putz house wreaths, and Melodrama has made another amazing Christmas tree skirt. You can pop on over to her blog to get some easy no-sew instructions.

After seeing Melodrama’s gorgeous felt tree skirts and an amazing vintage felt skirt (for a human) at an antique fair, I decided that I wanted to dip my own toe into felt decor. But I needed to start small. No, I’m not going full out and into Starsky sweater territory this time. I’ve learned my lesson.  So I thought, why not coasters?

On Your Mark, Get Set, Craft!

To make my DIY retro Christmas coasters, I started with some round cardboard coasters that I bought at a shop with party supplies years ago. You could cut your own pieces of stiff cardboard to use as a base.

Next, use your cardboard round to trace out the exact shape on felt, and cut out your round felt piece. You can pick up squares of colored felt at most craft stores, like Michaels. I used Aleen’s Tacky Glue to adhere the felt to the cardboard.

Now comes the fun part! You get to decorate your coasters with any shape you like. I went the retro route and used starbursts and boomerangs, but also included a weird looking cat, and some Dala horses. My grandmother displayed several Swedish Dala horses at Christmas time, and I just love them.

When you think of the shape you want to use, do a Google image search for a stencil or coloring page. I copied the images to word, cropped and resized them so they were small enough to fit on my coaster, and printed out my page.

After cutting out the shape on the paper, you can use it as a pattern and trace it onto your felt. Cut out your felt shape and adhere it to your coaster with more Tacky Glue. Easy Peasy.
