Mrs. Maisel Cocktail Party: The Tart Cherry Gin Rickey

January 6, 2019 By Untwisted Vintage Leave a Comment

Looking for some ideas for a Mrs. Maisel cocktail party, or perhaps just an evening of binge watching? Try the Gin Rickey, one of Abe Weissman’s (many) favorites! We’ve got you covered with the original lime and tart cherry versions of this classic cocktail.

We’re Going to the Catskills!

Although Midge’s Catskill’s cocktail of choice is a martini with olives, let’s look to Abe Weissman for more festive ideas for your Marvelous Mrs. Maisel cocktail party! Isn’t Tony Shalhoub great in this role? In the fourth episode of Season 2, Mr. Weissman rattles off a string of classic cocktails he has consumed in the course of the evening: a Napoleon, a Tom Collins, and the Gin Rickey.

Mr. Weissman Cocktail Party: The Classic Gin Rickey

The classic Gin Rickey consists of gin, lime, and carbonated water. My Old Mr. Boston DeLuxe Official Bartender’s Guide suggests the following:

  • 1 cube of ice
  • Juice of half a lime
  • 1.5 oz gin

Old Mr. Boston suggests using an 8 oz highball glass, filling it with the above ingredients, top with carbonated water, and stir. They also recommend you leave the lime in the glass.

While the original Gin Rickey is perfectly tasty, I love adding a little juice to a cocktail for color and flavor. Tart cherry juice is so bright and zippy, and naturally adds vibrant color to a cocktail. I used R.W. Knudsen’s Tart Cherry juice. It’s 100% juice and I found it in the natural section of my local grocery store for under $6.00. Between the lime and the tart cherry, this is a very bright cocktail. I added 1/2 teaspoon of agave nectar for just a touch of sweetness. If you want to go the vintage route, a teaspoon of powdered sugar would also do, or you could use simple syrup to taste.

Tart Cherry Gin Rickey

  • 1.5 oz Gin
  • 1.5 oz Tart cherry juice
  • Juice of half a lime
  • 1/2 teaspoon agave nectar
  • Lime flavored sparkling water
  • Ice
  1. Place ice in a cocktail shaker
  2. Add gin, cherry juice, agave, and lime juice
  3. Shake, shake, shake
  4. Strain into an ice filled glass
  5. Top with lime flavored sparkling water and lime wedges
