In my continuing quest to explore the Old Mr. Boston De Luxe Official Bartender’s Guide from 1969, today I bring you the Grand Royal Fizz. It sounds fancy, doesn’t it?
This creamy twist on a gin fizz has both lemon and orange juice, and a touch of cream (I used half and half). Hello gin flavored creamsicle!
The original recipe calls for maraschino liqueur, which is not something I have in my liqueur cabinet. This drink was getting a little too classy anyway, so I went with a substitution that is close in name and with a lot of red dye for color. Since I still have a mostly full jar of maraschino cherries from a previous Untwisted Vintage recipe in my refrigerator, I substituted a little jarred maraschino cherry syrup instead. Is this unsophisticated twist enough to strip this drink of it’s crown? You decide.
Untwisted Grand Royal Fizz Recipe
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Juice of 1/4 orange
1 teaspoon powdered sugar
2 oz. gin
1/2 teaspoon maraschino cherry syrup
2 teaspoons half & half
Carbonated water
- Combine all the ingredients (except for the carbonated water) in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake.
- Strain into an 8 oz glass.
- Fill with carbonated water, and stir.
This cocktail is designed to be served in a highball glass, but I like a pretty martini glass for most cocktails that don’t need to be served on ice.
This cocktail is a little bit tart, a little bit sweet, and a little bit creamy. I like it. How about you?
