The pineapple boat: a mid-century party staple. Perfect for tiki parties and picnics. Well, I say it can be perfectly patriotic as well! My pineapple boat is ready to set sail, powered by patriotic parasols and watermelon stars. Try this easy and delicious recipe for Independence Day!
Boat Building
It’s a lot easier to assemble a pineapple boat than you think. Simply split the pineapple in half and use a paring knife to cut around the edge to form the basic bowl shape. Then, cut slices through the middle, and use your knife and a spoon to slice and scoop out the pineapple meat. Make sure not to slice all the way through the exterior or you’ll have a leaky vessel. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube if you need detailed visual instructions.
Patriotic Party Time
Since the 4th is right around the corner, I decided to make my boat a little more patriotic by cutting some of the fruit into stars. I purchased a fun assortment of Vegetable and Fruit Cutters recently, and it was super quick and easy to transform my watermelon slices into a patriotic masterpiece. The parasols were a couple of bucks at a party store, but these Jumbo Umbrella Picks from Amazon look similar.
The cutters work better with things that slice easily. It was more of a struggle with the pineapple, so I decided to just use it for the watermelon this time. I’m excited to use the additional shapes for other recipes. Do you think my husband will eat more zucchini if I make the slices heart shaped?
Happy summer! Now go eat your fruit and veggies!
